Western Gray Squirrel

Sciurus griseus anthonyi

The western tree squirrel is a tree squirrel found in the western coast of the United States and Mexico. There are three subspecies that are broken up by regions. S.g. griseus, ranging from central Washington to central California. S. g. nigripes, ranging from south San Francisco bay down to San Luis Obispo county. And our local gray squirrel, S. g. anthonyi, ranging from San Luis Obispo down to Baja California.

The gray squirrel has distinct silverish gray fur on the dorsal side with a distinct white belly.

Of all the animals that I have caught with my many field cameras, this Gray squirrel is one of the most photogenic creature in the forest with over 200 pictures of it. I believe through out my collection of photos that it is the same specimen and might be territorial as I have some pictures of it chasing other squirrels out of its territory.

The western gray squirrel is one of three squirrel species that I have found to be living in this area. The other two are the California chipmunk and the California ground squirrel.

  • Number of confirmed specimens : 1+?
