California Chipmunk

Neotamias obscurus

Chipmunks are classified as 4 genera, consisting of the eastern chipmunk, with only one extant species that lives in the eastern north America. The Siberian chipmunk with only one extant species ranging through out northern Asia. The genera Nototamias consisting of three extinct species whose fossils where found through out north America. And the Neotamias consisting of 23 species that are distributed through out the western United States and Mexico.

The California chipmunk is one of three squirrel species that I have found in this area. The other two are the California ground squirrel and the western gray squirrel.
