California Orange-winged Grasshopper
Arphia ramona
Grasshoppers consist of 10,000 species of 12,000 species of the suborder Caelifera. The subfamily Oedipodinae is known as the band-winged grasshoppers and most species have a colorful hindwings, yellow, red orange sometimes edged with black, others have clear wings. The species within Oedipodinae are considered to be economically important because of their voracious apetite and when a big enough swarm can devastate a regions agricultural production.
There are 11 describer species of the Arphia genus with the Arphia ramona found from Central America up into North America. The California Orange-winged grasshopper makes a cracking noise by rubbing its wings together while flying.
